ABOUT THAKALI

The origin of the Thakali community is called “Thak-Sat-Se “or the Thak Khola which lies in the Kali Gandaki River valley of the Mustang District, Gandaki Province in Northen Nepal. Thakola is sandwiched between the pastoral highlands in the north and the agricultural lowlands in the south. It is also the transitional zone between Tibetan Buddhist culture and Hindu culture.

The Thakali community is endogamous and mainly composed of four sub clans (Thakali Phobe): Timtsen (Sherchan), Choeki (Gauchan), Bhurki (Bhattachan), and Salki (Tulachan). It has a Thakali Flag which consists of four colors which represents each thakali sub clans i.e. Red for Gauchan, green for Tulachan, white for Sherchan and black for Bhattachan. And also each sub clans has its own goddess (Lha) ie. Lha Langba Nhurbu of Gauchan , Lha Chyurin Gyalmo of Tulachan , Lha Ghangla Singi Karmo of Sherchan and Lha Yhawa Rangjyug for the Bhattachan. The Lhafewa (Barha Barse Kumbha Mela) or worship in 12 years, Toranlha or During Fagi Purnima (Worship of ancestral ) and Falo (Kumar Yatra) are the major festivals of Thakalis.
